Getting Started with Github Desktop

You will be installing a program on your computer called GitHub desktop. This is a program that makes using git and GitHub easier. It also allows you to upload copies of your work to the GitHub website. Once you install it, you’ll want to move all work to your working directory.

Terms to know: repository, repo, commit, diff, working directory, staging area, GitHub desktop, GitHub website.

Install GitHub Desktop

  1. Install GitHub desktop https://desktop.github.com/
  2. In GitHub desktop, log in to your GitHub account (Preferences > Accounts > GitHub.com)
